The problem with Islam: If you go back
to the life of Muhammad you’re going to get Osama bin Laden, how can you reform
it.

In the 9th
Century, Bukhari, collected extensive traditions about Muhammad that are
generally considered reliable by Muslims today. Here is one that deals with
non-Muslims:
“Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight
against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make Holy a holy war, do not embezzle
the spoils, do not break your pledge, and do not mutilate (the dead) bodies; do
not kill the children. When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite
them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also
accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to accept
(Islam); if they respond to you , accept it from them and desist from fighting
against them….If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. (A heavy tax that reduces them to
second class status) If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off
your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them.” Bukhari, Muslim, Book 19, no. 4294
This is a
footnote commentary on Koran 9:29, three choices that were offered to infidels
in the ninth century are the same three choices that were offered by ISIS to
the citizens of Mosul not very long ago. (conversion, slavery, or death.) The
degree of violence involved in these encounters has varied, but the practice
has a long history beginning with Muhammad.
When
Mohammad died there was much contention about who would be his successor. The Sunni and Shia split produced the two major groups
of Islam. The demographic breakdown between the two denominations is difficult
to assess and varies by source, but a good approximation is
that 85–90% of the world's Muslims are
Sunni and 15% are Shia.
Sunnis are a majority in most Muslim communities: in Southeast Asia, China, South Asia, Africa, and most of the Arab world. Shia make up the majority of
the citizen population in Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Bahrain, as well as being a
politically significant minority in Lebanon. Azerbaijan is predominantly Shia;
however, practicing adherents are much fewer. Indonesia has the largest number of
Sunni Muslims, while Iran has
the largest number of Shia Muslims in the world. Pakistan has the second-largest Sunni
as well as the second-largest Shia Muslim population in the world.
The historic background of the Sunni–Shia split lies in the schism that
occurred when the Islamic prophet Muhammad died in the year 632, leading
to a dispute over succession to
Muhammad as a caliph of the
Islamic community spread
across various parts of the world, which led to the Battle of Siffin. The
dispute intensified greatly after the Battle of Karbala, in
which Hussein ibn Ali and
his household were killed by the ruling Umayyad Caliph Yazid I, and the outcry for revenge
divided the early Islamic community. Today, there are differences in religious
practice, traditions, and customs, often related to jurisprudence. Although all Muslim groups consider the Quran to be divine, Sunni and Shia have different
opinions on hadith.
Over the years, Sunni–Shia relations have been marked by both
cooperation and conflict. Sectarian violence
persists to this day from Pakistan to Yemen and is a major element of
friction throughout the Middle East. Tensions between communities
have intensified during power struggles, such as the Bahraini uprising, the Iraq War, and most recently the Syrian Civil War and in
the formation of the self-styled Islamic State of Iraq
and the Levant and its advancement on Syria and Northern Iraq.
It has become
common for the President and his spokespersons, when asked why president Obama
seems to ignore Muslims killing Christians, to point out that Muslims are
killing Muslims also. Here once more is something that really needs
clarification.
We might ask,
is there really any difference between the Jihadi Islamic terrorists in the
middle east and the secular Muslims that are fighting them there and promoting
“the peace loving Muslims that far outnumber them”? Is there really an internal
battle in Islam and if so how would we describe it?
The answer to
the first question is yes. Muslims are killing other Muslims (apostates in
their view)) in far greater numbers than they are killing people of other
faiths.
It is the
answer to the second question that needs clarifying. The fundamental difference
and argument is not with the goal of a worldwide Islamic Caliphate, both sides
of Islam want it, but with the means that would be best to achieve it.
I quoted an American
“peace-loving Muslim in a recent blog;
“The stated goal of the
Brotherhood in North America is to engineer a ’grand jihad’ with the purpose of
‘eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within...Islam isn’t
in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Koran
should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted
religion in the country.’”

Ahmad, his friends at CAIR (Counsel on American Islamic Relations), the
clerics, the scholars, and the apologists for Islam that Jeh Johnson, the
Director of Homeland Security, is cultivating across the country are putting
themselves forward as peace-loving Muslims and practitioners of a “beautiful
religion.
However, to Omar Ahmad, cutting off heads, burning people alive, and
burying children alive, is counter-productive to their soft diplomacy approach.
They are already well-along in France, Germany, England, the Netherlands and
Belgium--and things like the Charlie Hebdo massacre just stir up trouble and do
not contribute to the ultimate goal.
The homicidal Son’s of Allah spreading their stain across the middle east
and into Europe and the soft diplomacy peace-loving Muslims in America follow
the same false prophet, the same false law in the same false book and worship
the same false god. They may argue theology, but this is mostly a smoke screen.
They both want the same thing, a global caliphate, and only differ in the
approach they think is best to get it.
The
people in the Whitehouse would do well, especially when negotiating with Iran,
to remember that since the days of the Barbary Pirates, evangelistic Islam has
responded to only two things: very large bribes, and overwhelming military
force. Jeh Johnson and the professorial children in the State Department and
Whitehouse should read some history, the Koran, and the Ahadith, open their
eyes, and not get snookered by a bunch of “peace-loving Muslims whose Koran makes
it clear that infidels are not worthy of the truth.
He (Muhammad) received a revelation from Allah that
commanded Muslims to fight against Jews and Christians until they accepted
Islamic hegemony, symbolized by payment of a poll tax (Jizya) and submitted to discriminatory regulations that would
ensure that they would be constantly reminded of their subordinate position. He
told his followers to offer these unbelieves conversion to Islam, as he had
offered to the rulers, and if they refused, to offer them the opportunity to
pay tribute as vassals of the Islamic state, and if they refused that also, to
go to war (with the unbelievers). Bukhari 9th century
The only clear difference between the “peace-loving
Muslims” and the “blood-thirsty Muslims” today is an argument between them
about the best way to take over the world for Allah.

As I write
the temperature is slowly creeping up from -5 degrees to a high of +6 degrees.
The 15” of snow that arrived Monday is still all on the ground and keeping us
more or less snowed in. The weatherman is saying it will be 39 degrees and
raining on Saturday with 38 degrees and freezing rain on Sunday.
Looking out
on this, I recall a sunny day in Santa Barbara, California, in July, 1983. Here
is a haiku for a winter day.

In the February 7 World, Joel Belz
asks a fair question of the Muslim clerics in Detroit, the Ivy League
academics, the Washington think tank specialists, the network anchors and
authorities, and the President of the United States, who are all working hard
to present Islam as a “beautiful religion” with millions of Muslims around the
world yearning for peace. He asks for some hard evidence that this is true.
“Here is the evidence we’d like to see—the evidence a watching
world deserves. Central to your display should be that Islamic country or State
to which millions of people from the rest of the world are streaming because it
is so compelling and attractive. Where, on this whole globe, the Islamic
society where this “beautiful religion” (President Obama’s words last week) is
practiced in a way that prompts people by the millions to move there and to
live the rest of their lives?”
In 2001 Belz wrote
about “five Islamic countries considered by many as ‘frontispiece’ societies
exhibiting a moderate practice of Islam: Syria, Indonesia, Egypt, Pakistan, and
Saudi Arabia. Of those five, 14 years later, only Indonesia retains the right
to display itself on a travel poster.” Belz does not condone the harassment of
Muslim people—but he strongly condemn what amounts to a conspiracy of silence
that does not even permit rational discussion of the whole subject.
Last week’s posting
was a long one, this is not something that can be discussed in sound-bites and on
bumper-stickers. What follows is a reflection that is full of facts and worthy
of your attention. I do not know the writer but I know enough about the subject
to recognize the truth when I see it.

world-wide daily. At the recent Washington Prayer Breakfast, President Obama
lectured a roomful of mostly evangelical Christians. He claimed moral
equivalency between radical Islamic terrorists and the Crusaders. Historically, a crusade was any of the military expeditions undertaken in
the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries by the Christian powers of Europe to
recapture the Holy Land from the Muslims. (and attempting to prevent militant
Islam from overwhelming western civilization.)
Anyone who has read history, the Koran and the
Hadith (The Traditions of the Noble Prophet Mohammad) should find this posited
moral equivalence a load of codswallop dished up with a garnish of smoke and
mirrors. Not long after 9/11 when the temporizers were proclaiming “Islam is a
religion of peace, and these terrorists have hi-jacked it,” an insider summed
the truth up briefly and neatly;
“The problem with Islam:
