99 AND DOING FINE

NINETY NINE AND DOING FINE
Growing Old may not be for Sissies, but that doesn't keep our Aunt Trudie Claus from doing it well. Trudie is looking forward to her 100th birthday party in January. She has all her wits about her, needs glasses only to read, just bought two new hearing aids and is already a hundred pages into the big book in her lap.
She lives in the assisted living wing of retirement home in Wheaton, where, instead of dozing before the TV like many of her fellow residents, she chooses to continue to learn, to improve her mind, and to pay attention to what is going on in the world.
The book she is reading is titled, "Inside the Revolution; How The Followers of Jihad, Jefferson and Jesus Are Battling to Dominate the Middle East and Transform The World" by Joel C. Rosenberg. These days you need to be a pretty good reader just to get through the titles. I recently started a book with a similarly long title: "The Tyranny of Liberalism: Understanding and Overcoming Administered Freedom, Inquisitorial Tolerance, and Equality by Command" by James Kalb.
I took this picture to remind myself of the power of the word in a world overwhelmed with images. Perhaps it will be a reminder and encouragement to some of you as well.
